No. 0     Original Topic: Server error leading to lost email
By:  Administrator   Gender: M   Age: 51   on  Feb 2, 2007 at 8:21 AM   Viewed 192928 times
For some users, email and forum comments beginning the evening of Jan 31, 2007 up till during the day on Feb 1 (the next day) were lost due to operator error at the host company during the process of changing servers.

I spent a long time on the phone yesterday with their tech and customer service departments, getting plenty of apologies, but ultimately no feasible resolution to the lost data. It is available in a compressed file. Sorting out what belongs where and distributing everything would become a daunting task, however. Even my own work, a couple hours worth, went up in the dust.

My apology for failing to anticipate such a problem and discuss any possible fallout with the techs down there before authorizing the server change. If known (even though they tell me this was a fluke), I would have shut the entire site down for a few hours rather than allow people to waste time on things that were going into the trash.

At any rate, check your "Sent Mail" folder to determine whether anything of yours failed to get through.

Sorry for the inconvenience. In the future, regardless of what they promise, I will take the site offline during changes of that nature.

Randal, MC admin.

Thanks for all you do Randal!

It's not the end of the world ... no national security issues involved ... stuff happens.

Thanks for the apology, but I can't imagine that anyone would be able to anticipate all the flukes that could happen.

Hi Randal

When I continued without comment, the Forums had disappeared. However when I made a comment, the Post Preview screen was there. I will see if this message gets posted.

Thank you for the update, I was wondering what happened, at first I thought you had deleted the post, but I know that when you do that you usually send a notice, so I thought a possible error happened. The Lord be with you, be a blessing.

We forgive you!! *hugs* I wasn't affected by this, but I can imagine the frustration with all people involved...and hope everything's worked out now, especially for you!!

Thanks for the time and energy you put in to make it work for all of us here, and thanks even more when things like this happen---endless phone calls and putting YOUR time and energy into making it work again so all of us can be here!!

God bless you,

Randal,
I don't know if I had posted anything during this time the fluke happened.
I personally was not effected. I am just thankful for the time and energy you put into this site.

Keep up the good work.
Things will sometimes have flukes ...but what I have seen has been a great improvement on this site since you bought it.

I lost a few messages as well as a few messages I sent were lost, and most likely not read in time. But that's minor. I'll resend as soon as I remember what I sent!

I appreciate all the work you do for the site.

Be Blessed,
Mark

I know this is a long shot and probably not at all pheasible, but worth a thought...what if there was a way for us to access the list and if we have something on the list of "not sent" items, we could access it only by using our password and private email, to provide as much security as possible for to the people that have had items sent? If don't have anything on the list, our password would not open anything. Just a thought!

What a HEADACHE this must have given you and the Host server.
I lost some mail and posts too, but it happened for the better for me. Now I can re-evaluate and improve upon what I previously sent/posted. You can exhale now, it's all behind us. We appreciate your hard work. Thanks.

Randal.. your doing the best that can be expected.. Right? So, we can live with some lost data... the site is still free we can't complain to much for the great service you are doing... Hang in there and don't let anybody jump down your throat for an unanticipated lose of data. C'est La vie.

I started to say...you're only human, but...
Computers aren't "human" OR flawless at times.
Things like that happen sometimes. I just try to roll with the
punches...sometimes I do a lot of rolling!

I was out of town and had little access to the computer, so haven't even tried to get on. Just got back and am leaving again in a few days for Texas with my daughter so she doesn't have to travel alone. I cannot really afford this but I have never seen my grandchildren so am doing it anyway. They're in the middle of a divorce and I have no idea how it will turn out and if I'll ever get to see the grandkids if I don't go now. She's a Christian and he's an abusive person. She could use some prayers! Ruby
