The Messianic Kingdom, part 1
by Scott Fisher

The Kingdom of God and first-century Talmudic Judaism were incompatible. The Jewish leadership of Jesus’ day, and their followers, did not know God. Those are not my words, those are the words of Jesus!

Fulfillment! The presence and ministry of John the Baptist followed by Jesus was a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. But have you ever really studied how often something written in the New Testament is stated as being in fulfillment of something written in the Old Testament? There are dozens of passages of Scripture in the New Testament that contain the words “this is to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets” or words very similar to that. The Law and the Prophets and the Psalms were pointing to Him, pointing to the Messianic Kingdom. His very presence WAS THE FULFILLMENT!

The Apostle Paul claimed that what had happened to the Old Testament Israelites had happened as an example to the first-century Jews, upon whom "the ends of the ages have come." We're looking at "fulfillment" -- The presence of Messiah was the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy and a key component of it was the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple.

Jesus began His public ministry stating "The time is fulfilled..." His coming was at the precise moment in time set by the Father from before the foundation of the world. Paul said that "when the fullness of time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman..." The fullness of time...check out today's video and see the significance of this statement.

The first-century Jewish interpretation of the Messianic Kingdom was a physical kingdom, a Judaistic kingdom, centered in Jerusalem and exalting the Jews to a position of world domination. In other words, their interpretation of the kingdom was that it was geopolitical, geocentric, and ethnocentric! It was NONE of those! They believed that the kingdom of God was going to be an exaltation of the Jewish people above all other people and that it would center around their bloodline — the actual physical, blood descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, through the line of King David! Their interpretation of the Messianic Kingdom and the Messianic Kingdom introduced by Jesus is at the very heart of why they killed Him.

The Seventy Weeks of Daniel, 490 years, gave us the precise timeline of the coming of Messiah...and it is NOT speaking of an event in our future! It is 490 years from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem after the Babylonian destruction of the city and the temple in 586 B.C. That decree was issued by Artaxerxes in 454 B.C. and exactly 483 years later Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist and began His public ministry. In the middle of the 70th week, following 3-1/2 years of ministry, He was crucified. The long-promised Messiah of Israel and the Savior of the whole world came at the precise moment in history fulfilling all prophecy and launching the Messianic Kingdom, the New Covenant.

The prophecy of the 70 Weeks of Daniel gives us both the timing AND the nature of the Messianic Kingdom. The angel, Gabriel, gave this prophetic word to Daniel and in Daniel 9:24 we have a perfect synopsis of The Gospel of the Kingdom. We begin to look at the six items that would find their fulfillment in Jesus.
