No. 0     Original Topic:  Good words for difficult times.
By:  Jeff74996   Gender: M   Age: 56   on  Sep 8, 2017 at 6:26 PM   Viewed 1903 times
Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
46:2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
46:3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah.
46:4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.
46:5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.
46:6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.
46:7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah.
46:8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, how he has brought desolations on the earth.
46:9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire.
46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!"
46:11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah.

And we will need to pay attention to more of the same in the future.

Incidentally, Ps. 46:1 was written in my high school senior yearbook by a Christian gal. I was pagan at the time and didn't receive the Lord until 5 months after graduation.

Thanks Jeff -- Timely and good Words indeed.

Luther- the Great German Reformer, wrote this hymn from this psalm...Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott; which means- A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.

This song encourages hope and trust in God; in his power and providence, and his gracious presence with his church in the worst of times. His Sovereignty never is dismayed, but to only those who are faithful and true.

Acts 17.27
That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

thanks Jeff

Thanks for that song. I have heard it before, but not the same as this time. Thanks Verbatim for the inspiration.

Yes we will. I really felt the need to read that psalm last Sunday in our little gathering. After reading Revelation 18 it was pretty depressing. But this world and its system desperately needs to end. God has something far better in store. Even so, Lord Jesus, Come!

I bet that has affected you over the years - particularly since you still talk about it. Scripture written by people we know, or have known, certainly has an impact.

Twice it is written that the God of Jacob is our fortress. It makes me glad that He is the God of Jacob - because I have read about Jacob. If He is the God of Jacob, He can certainly be the God of Jeff, too -because neither of us are perfect.

Genesis 27:19 And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.
27:20 And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the LORD thy God sent me good speed.
