The guy in front of me at WalMart is actually writing a check. Not to be outdone, I am going to try paying with some turquoise beads and a beaver pelt.

Doesn't WalMart now run the checks through some kind of machine which takes the money right out of your account ... much like how a debit card works ?

Of course, I don't write checks much anymore ... but many places have this same type of set up.

Yes it sure does.

When my children were little, and we were often times strapped between paydays, I'd write a check at the supermarket because normal turnaround was 2-3 days, right before a pay period (when an emergency like a milk or bread shortage occurred.)

Some supermarkets where I live still honor that old fashioned method. I believe it's not because they're technically challenged. They do it for all the hardworking, middle to lower working class families that go through the same struggles to feed their families (from paycheck to paycheck,) who may depend on that system rather than cash in/debit out.
