| The Midnight Ride Thru the Tennessee Hills
Sometimes the things that happened to Janel and I,
although not necessarily a 'spiritual' event,
they are worthy of being remembered.
Below, I have shared a true story,
set to the cadence of a poem.
Know, during the course of this event,
my heart was full of 'fast and furious' prayers.
This experience occurred during our move
from Texas to Pennsylvania.
It was a comfort to know God was with us,
as we crossed this vast country.
Note: The 'cruise mobile' or 'cruise'
were nicknames we gave our van.
We always named our vehicles,
a tradition handed down to us from my boss in Texas.
"The Midnight Ride Thru The Tennessee Hills"
'twas wild and dark
that fateful night
as the moon came over the rise
and as the dusk gave way
to the deepening gloom
not a star winked in its skies
the daughter and I
fourteen, she was
though her ways belied her years
were riding along in the 'cruise mobile'
up ahead loomed the Tennessee hills
nine o'clock, ten o'clock, eleven o'clock passed
and the towns were far and few
and my mind was a storm
as midnight came
while I sought for some beds for two
the hills got high,
and the valleys grew deep
and the road got darker by the turn
and a creeping panic pressed 'round my thoughts
as my white-knuckled hands gripped the stern
the eighteen wheelers
with their million little lights
were the only lamps for the road
and they held seventy-five in their midnight ride
and their precious lamps fled as they drove
though the 'cruise' was loaded down
and it's load weighed a ton
and the noises in its motor sent a chill
I had to step on the gas
so I wouldn't lose those lights
'cause the night was so black 'in them hills'
"oh mom, what is that?"
came my daughter's fearful whisper
peering high above the van into the night
and when I followed with my eyes
the direction of her gaze
my heart lurched in fear at the sight
for a mountain loomed before us
and it filled the midnight sky
with a black that was so big I had to gasp
'cause the flat, dry lands of Texas
where we’d lived so long before
left us shocked with all the strangeness of this pass
though a chill went through us both
and our eyes were wide with fear
yet, we had to fly
to keep up with the lights
'cause the truckers didn't slow
when the monster mountain showed
so we fled along behind them in our fright
'twas a night we will remember
as the years of time move on
its rapid days, too numerous to count them
when the kid and I were moving
and the midnight crept around us
as we flew along the Tennessee mountains

| Thank you for sharing this with us !
Reminds me of a time many years back,
When my wife and I drove in a night of black.
To add to it all there was a thick fog,
But we followed a big truck just like a dog.
Finally we got home thanking God once again,
So many blessings, where do we begin.
Always being watched over by our Good Lord.
Especially this one night in our Galaxie Ford.
