The Witness

We've lost our way
I cannot say
The turn that caused our erring
But the heart of Christ
And His love-filled light
Is absent, in our sharing

Our words ring forth
His life to abort
In the platitudes of our religious rhetoric
While those who await
Our arrest of their fate
In hopes of the love that will better it

Our smiles are elastic
They gleam forth in plastic
As we pat their downed heads in our ease
We seek for the clone
Of the church-friendly drone
While their hearts churn in rage at our tease

Their hunger that inspired
And pain that required
An inquiry into our message
Was drawn back, in fashion
When they perceived no compassion
But, rather a contempt for their wreckage

They return to their darkness
Where reigns certain starkness
A life, wherein love is a stranger
And set about losing
The hope they were choosing
In a song 'bout a babe in a manger

When they stand before Jesus
And state their clear reason
Why they did not darken church door

They say how they searched
For Him in church
But His face was not found in our lore.
